Community Science Project: Transcribing Burial Records from the St James Burial Ground

For my community science project contribution, I participated in transcribing old burial records for the Stories of St James’ Burial Ground project. It was the largest archaeological excavation of burials in the UK consisting of over 40,000 burials on the site. The burial records contain records of burial details including name, age, location and date of burial, etc. The St James Garden was used as burial grounds between 1788 and 1853. These buried coffins include items of meaning to the deceased. By excavating this burial site and knowing the identities of the people buried there is essential to understanding how people lived in London at the time. I zoomed on burial records, like the picture above, and registered names, burial dates, and burial locations listed as ground sections numbered 1-4. I found knowing the names of men, women, and children that died in 18-19th century London and how they died incredibly interesting.
