Music and dance is a big part of the arts and culture in New York. Since music and dance can differ based on preferences, it should be an interesting topic to discuss. For the class assignment, we could look into this aspect of the different cultures in New York City.
For example, we could examine the performances of different ethnic cultures. We can do this by watching operas, musicals or other live performances on Broadway with student rush tickets and Macaulay discounts. If not, we could even watch street performances of aspiring performers. With each performance we watch, some background information should be conducted.
For example, when we decide to discuss a song, we could research about the language by researching the phonetics and alphabet system/writing system; or when reviewing the dance form, we can research about the origins of it and how popular the dance form was or is currently. This would also lead back to some historical events, which we can provide a mini-summary of.
For a deeper understanding of each culture we could also research or interview people about the traditional or classic songs of each culture, for example what songs are sang during celebrations, etc. We could also look into the famous singers of each language/culture and compare how music has evolved over the years.
