The Harlem Renaissance was a movement of cultural renewal for African Americans from around 1918-1937. Progressing in literacy, music, theater and visual arts, the participants of the movement sought to remake the “Negro” in an image apart from white stereotypes. Racial pride was a huge characteristic of the time period and represented the idea that the “New Negro,” through intellect and culture, could challenge the racism and stereotypes to promote integration: uplifting the African American race.
