Generation Gap

There is no particular style that defines New York City. Every individual aims at “making a statement” and standing out; thus seeing rather interesting fashion choices in the city is no longer much of a surprise. Despite the various trends people choose to follow in New York, with ease you can distinguish the tourists from natives simply by the way they dress. There is, though difficult to put into words, a general definition of what it means to dress like a New Yorker. However, fashion changes with each generation, and each generation – particularly the older generation – is less willing to adapt to the new styles. Even walking around various parts of New York City, you may easily notice the different ways each generation dresses. This is not limited to the “casual,” but may also be seen in the business context. For this project, I would examine how neighborhoods in New York City vary their dress according to the age demographics, as well as try to show how all these styles – both from the older generation and younger generation – fit into the definition of “dressing like a New Yorker.” Additional research would have to be done examining the trends in New York of past generations.
