Dragon Boat Festival to Immigrants in NYC

It doesn’t seem obvious at first as to how this holiday relates to New York City’s immigration, but if you really think about it, especially after reading through the history, culture and diversity, and significance sections of my page, you’ll realize its importance. Parents want their kids to learn and hold onto their rich culture and heritage, and the festival is a good and social way to do that.

The first dragon boat festival in the US took place in New York in 1990. 1 Now there are international teams for dragon boating, so it has spread widely in the past 20 years.

Just like parades dedicated to saints and holidays such as St Patrick’s day as well as religious holidays such as  Cinco de Mayo,  the dragon boat festival is a tool used to build the ethnic identity “Chinese” rather than an identity specific to a province or hometown.
