Using This Website

Maintain your Online Scholarly Identity

Please make sure that your full name appears under your posts. To do so, on Dashboard, go to Users > Your Profile and edit the settings accordingly.

Please also write a short introduction of yourself to the class. All the introductions will be posted under About Us. To do so:

1. Create a new post

2. Under Categories on the right, check “About Us” and “Students.”

How to Post Assignments (Or, How to Create a Post)

To post your Class Blog assignments:

1. Create a new post

2. Under Categories on the right, check “Class Blog.”  This will ensure that your post appears in the right place on the website.

3. Under Tags on the right, list down keywords that reflect the content of your post. For e.g. “gentrification”; “race”; “amenities.” These tags will collectively generate a cloud, visualizing the different topics covered over the course of the semester.

Embed Images into a Post or Page

To embed images to your post or page, click the “Add Media” button above the editor box in which you are creating your post. You may choose from an image that has already been uploaded onto the site or upload a file from your computer.

If you are posting a photograph you took, credit yourself! Be sure to list your name. If desired, title or caption your photograph.

If using an image created by someone else, attribute accordingly. List the image creator’s name, title (if any) and source (the url where the image was obtained). The attribution can be entered in the caption field of the image. For a more elegant presentation, you can hyperlink your source instead of copy and pasting the entire url. See the example below. Note that the hyperlinked text, “Forgotten NY” is linked to the site where the file of this image was obtained.

Uploading Images from our Class Trips to Gallery

We will be building an image gallery using the website’s Next Gen Gallery function to display the images that you take during our class trips. Image Galleries are listed under the Image tab on the menu bar. You can see an example of a Gallery here. Here’s how to upload your images to the Gallery.

  1. Log in to the website. Go to Dashboard.
  2. Under Gallery at the top of the page, click “Add Gallery/Images.”
  3. Select the files you want to upload. Be sure to choose the corresponding gallery. For example, choose “Tenement Museum” for images taken during our visit there. Click “Upload Images.”
  4. Once your images are uploaded, hover your cursor on Gallery. Go to “Manage Gallery.”
  5. Select the Gallery in which you just uploaded your images.
  6. Write a caption and photo credit in your images in the “Description” field. That is the box beneath the space where the file name of your image appears. Your caption should be presented as follows: [Caption]. Photo by [name].
  7. Click “Save Changes” once you’re done.
  8. Your images and captions should appear on the corresponding Images page. Be sure to check it to make sure you got everything right.
