With this map, one can visualize the percentage of Brooklyn residents who have asthma in each region based on the varying shades of green. One can also see the percentages of people who have had an asthma-related visit to the emergency room or urgent care center based on the outline color. I chose to display these two variables on my map because Greenpoint and Williamsburg both presented higher percentages of people with asthma, as compared to other New York City neighborhoods, at 5.8% for Williamsburg/Bushwick and 8% for Greenpoint. Interestingly, however, the given data shows that Greenpoint had no cases of people visiting the emergency room or urgent care center for an asthma-related issue. On the other hand, Williamsburg, which had a slightly lower percentage of residents with asthma than Greenpoint, had 56.7% of people who required emergency care for their asthma.
Both variables dealing with asthma show intriguing results about the Greenpoint-Williamsburg area, which is known to have poor air quality, little park space, and old dilapidated structures, particularly by the water. According to WebMD, asthma is a disease that is characterized by the inflammation of the airways, which may consequently lead to difficulty breathing and coughing. Moreover, asthma attacks can be caused by different environmental factors, including smoke and dust. Therefore, the neighborhood features mentioned earlier may play a role in the residents’ experiences with asthma.
