This was different from any other event we've attended because we were the featured artists. It was fun to see the photographs that my classmates presented in class be put on display. I was also looking for my photograph in the collection and was excited when I spotted it. The pictures were categorized based on subject. I was surprised to see so many similiar photographs. There were many pictures featuring New York City nightlife. The bright lights, tall buildings, and beautiful landscape was a good depiction of the neighborhood I relate to.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/snaphot-exhibit-macaulay#comments hannah lee nyc arts who we are Sat, 12 Dec 2009 23:19:53 +0000 hlee 473 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Individual Visit #3: Trip to the MoMA http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/individual-visit-3-trip-moma
Who is Timothy Walter Burton? Primarily known as a filmmaker, he is an artist who taps into the fantasy world. His works know no boundaries. Stepping into the creature's mouth, the entrance to his exhibit at the MoMA, I was taken into the Burton universe. There were sculptures, drawings, and paintings that illustrate his talent as an artist beyond the big screen. There were little alien creature sculptures with many eyes. There was a boy with nails in his eyes. It was a bit gruesome-looking, but I couldn't avert my gaze. This was true of many of the pieces at the exhibit.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/individual-visit-3-trip-moma#comments hannah lee who we are Sat, 12 Dec 2009 22:43:30 +0000 hlee 472 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Individual Visit #2: Trip to the American Folk Art Museum http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/individual-visit-2-trip-american-folk-art-museum
On Tuesday, when most of us have quite a large chunk of free time in between classes, Natasha, Stephanie, Aimee, Laura, Jerrica, and I went on a trip to the MoMA. Who would have thought that the MoMA would be closed on Tuesdays? We were all shocked by the sign that was planted outside the museum indicating that it was not open. I was definitly disappointed because I had hoped to see the Tim Burton exhibit that everyone was raving about. I caught a glimpse of it during our class tour of the MoMA. I told myself that I would return to see the exhibit.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/individual-visit-2-trip-american-folk-art-museum#comments hannah lee who we are Tue, 08 Dec 2009 08:49:56 +0000 hlee 464 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 MoMA tour 11/18 http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-tour-1118
The class went on a tour of the cubism exhibit at the MoMA. Each one is in a different position and all meet your gaze directly if you stare into the painting. It's an uneasy confrontation that engages the viewer like we discussed in class. Their bodies are very angular and strong, but nonetheless still feminine. It would have never occurred to me that these women were prostitutes from a brothel. I thought it was a bold painting celebrating the strength of women in their bare and natural state. The confrontation that can come across as uneasy is really effective here.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-les-demoiselles-d-avignon#comments hannah lee painting who we are Mon, 23 Nov 2009 02:07:38 +0000 hlee 393 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Alexander String Quartet at the Baruch Performing Arts Center http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/alexander-string-quartet-baruch-performing-arts-center-0
The Alexander String Quartet's performance began with a sweet sounding introduction. I've always admired violins for their ability to produce music that can sound sweet yet powerful. The performance was a nice reminder. The classical music they played was calming. The soft notes were floating through my ears. They were so sweet in fact that I would love to listen it on the train during stressful morning rush hours and whenever I just needed to cool my head. The BAM Harvey Theater bred a new kind of atmosphere. The building was faded, but it added to the theatrical sense. Being seated high up, we were able to witness everything pretty clearly. After reading "Irony and Sincerity," I have high hopes for Mark Morris's production of the classic Nutcracker ballet. The reading addresses the meaning behind The Hard Nut and how Morris attempted to combine the classics with popular culture. Morris was an unconventional rebel artist, and I admire his thoughts and visions that put his play in motion. His beliefs and ideas about the "common human fate" are provocative.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/hard-nut-irony-and-sincerity#comments hannah lee who we are Sun, 08 Nov 2009 23:00:26 +0000 hlee 318 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09
