The art around me

New York, a city considered by many a capital of fashion industry, economic opportunities and cultural events is one of the most popular tourist destinations. People from all around the world want to come here to take a part in a spectacle that they cannot experience. We, New Yorkers, can spot a tourist from a mile away, that’s him standing on a middle of cross walk starring up in the sky, or taking picture of guy singing in the subway.

Tourists, they will not omit to take a picture of every single building they passed during the buss tour, stop at every single store that has a SALE sign in a window, and go to a newest Broadway show. Not realizing it, by doing so, they participate in creation and exhibition of all the art New York has to offer.

Mean time, we, people who live here, in search of art, go to museums or follow the New York Times reviews to stay on top of artistic events and new galleries openings. Unlike tourists, we never dare to stop and look around to admire what the City has to offer.

The architecture is New York’s most developed discipline of art; it is perfected to the last bit of it. Not only it is growing in parallel to the population, but also it adjusts itself to new trends, diverse neighborhoods, and different pocket sizes. We can find beautiful glass and metal skyscrapers in the Midtown, little brow-stone houses in East Village, and luxury apartment buildings on the River Side.

This picture, to me, is a quintessence of art in NYC. I took it in the Financial District where I am almost every week. Doing the same route I never bather to look around, for being late for work I usually focus on dodging the “slow-walkers”. One day though, walking through the City with my camera I ended up in the familiar neighborhood with a different project. Being on a look out for picturesque compositions I was charmed by combination of sharp lines bulky blocks and dynamic curves.

It made me realize that New Yorkers should behave like tourist from time to time. We shouldn’t be embarrassed to walk around with a camera on our neck and take pictures of everything around us.
