"City Symphony" in August Rush

In class the other day we were discussing the topic of music. An idea came up regarding whether or not music required words or lyrics. Most of us, if not all, agreed that music does not necessarily need lyrics. In fact, silence can also be considered in this regard. In this clip from the movie August Rush, a little boy is wandering around New York city. As you can see from the clip and the rest of the movie if you so choose to watch it, August Rush loves music and finds many ways of creating such beautiful music. Here, he is seen conducting the sounds of nature and the city that are present in our every day lives, such as the honking of horns and the blowing of wind. I saw this movie in its entirety and the way August Rush plays the guitar is simply amazing. He does not just pull on the different strings but finds ways to create varying sounds from that one instrument such as tapping against the guitar and over the strings. This adds to the performance and creates a more complex and pleasant sound.

Coincidently Deborah and I shared a similar view on the matter being discussed in class. It was actually surprising to see that someone else shared this opinion because I did not think anyone else would have seen this movie. I never heard of it, until I stumbled across it on HBO and decided to watch it. It gave me a different look on music because it revealed the universality of music and the notion that music is all around us, all you have to do is listen.
