Darfur, is it a lost cause?

Art is a medium used to open people’s eyes.
On a Tuesday night I attended an exhibit called Darfur/Darfur. It was organized in order to promote and spread awareness about the situation in Darfur. It is a travelling exhibition that through digitally projected images aims to open people’s eyes to the catastrophe that is happening in Sudan. It is only one of the steps taken by the organization in NYC, which during the week of G-8 meetings, is planning more protest and rallies.

The idea of the travelling exhibition comes from Leslie Thomas, who inspired by a photo she once saw of a girl with a bullet hole in her back, decided to reach out to public and get their attention.
Accompanied by African music pictures have been already screened in places like: Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C., Hammer Museum in L.A., Jewish Museum in Berlin. The show is suppose to make people realize that it is time to take action for the conflict in Darfur has caused death of 500,000 people since it started in 2005.

I feel especially connected to this exhibit, for photography and humanitarian actions, are the two most important things to me. I think that photographs are irreplaceable when it comes to informing people. As it is commonly known “a picture is worth a thousand words”, it is capable of provoking emotions that no text is able to do.
