The Legendary Image of Coco Chanel

The famous photograph of legendary designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel is one of my all time favorite photographs. Since we just learned how to anaylze photographs, I decided to take a very quick analyzation of it. The photograph is black and white, in accordance with the time period it was taken in. It is unclear is this is the original photograph, or if the shadow on the left side of the image is just an effect of old age. The subject is a woman, clearly of great social status. She sits on a simple white antique chair, which relates to the "simple elegance" the woman also upholds. The subject is wearing all black with pearl accessories. Her outfit is simple, but the accessories add a dramatic yet womanly feel. She wears a petite fedora and her 1920's fingerwaves flow beautifully beneath it. What is suprising about the photograph, and possibly the "punctum", is the cigarette she holds in her mouth. Cigarettes may be one of the farthest associated with "class", yet the cigarette in this photograph in a way completes the image. The cigarette turns into something elegant, just because of the woman who possesses it. The look on the subject's face is confident. She gazes off at the side almost as if she refuses to look at the camera front on. The woman in the photograph is defining. It is truly an age-iconic image.
