Reading By Joseph O'Connor

Everyone in attendance was enticed by renowned author Joseph's O'Connor humor, wit, charisma, confidence and undoubtedly, his accent. He sounded like an older Porfessor O'Malley. He was interesting and very entertaining to listen to. His stories about dreary Ireland reminded me of the autobiography "Angela's Ashes" by another renowned Irish author, late Frank McCourt. All his talk of Patty Smith gave everyone a good laugh. All of his readings were powerful and some very funny. He read every word with conviction and clarity. My favorite moment of the evening was his poem at the end. Being a huge fan of hip hop, I greatly appreciated that particular work. It sounded very much like a rap especially because of the rhythmic  way he was reciting it. In fact, it didn't sound much like a recitation, more like a freestyle. And maybe it was because I was listening to Lupe Fiasco all day but it sounded like Joseph worked with him. I was impressed by the rhyming and cleverness in incorporating NYC and Baruch. I also loved when he said he thought rappers like Eminem did more for poetry than many 20th century poets because rhyming in poetry was frowned upon before. I thought this was fascinating because I didn't know rhyming was frowned upon before. And listening to A LOT of Eminem, I definitely think rhyming is a skill. In the end, I walked away thinking that Joseph O'Connor was an awesome guy. When I told a friend of mine from Hunter that I had attended this reading, she said she was jealous because he was a great writer, which gave another incentive to look into his work.
