Park Slope has numerous historic churches in the area. Many are built in Victorian Gothic Revival style.
1)Old First Reformed Church: Located on Seventh Avenue and Carroll Street, was formally established in 1660, although services had begun four years earlier. The first church structure was built in 1666 on what is now Fulton Street, between Lawrence and Bridge Streets. In 1792, English was substituted for Dutch in the church service. The present building, fourth on this site, was erected in 1889. It contains Vergilio Tojetti's mural, The Empty Tomb.The Church was built by George L. Morse and has beautiful windows which illustrate New Testament parables. It has a raked floor, monumental chandelier and coffered paneling on the vaulted ceiling.
2) Saint John's Episcopal Church: Founded in 1826-27 and is known for its diversity. The church is in English Country Style filled with gorgeous stained glass windows which were donated in the 1960s. It is the second oldest parish in Brooklyn and it is located on 139 St. John's Place.
3)Church! of Park Slope: Founded in 2003 and has about 60-70 members. It is located on 326 6th Street.
4) St. Augustine R.C. Church: Founded in 1886 and located on 116 Sixth Avenue. It was built by Parfitt Brothers , a famous English firm. There are turrets studded with brownstones, stylized, leaf pattersn crockets and finials and three lacy, copper-clad rooftop excressences. It was abandonded by its wealthy Irish worshipers after an elevated steam train was built on the avenue. Today, masses are said in three languages; English, Spanish and Haitian French.
5) St. Thomas Aquinas & Holy Family Church: Founded in 1886, located on 225 6th Avenue
6)Park Slope Presbyterian Church: Founded in 2003 and it is a church that worships and celebrates the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The church has a magnificient circular interior and richly colored windows. It is located on 237 7th Avenue.
7)St. Francis Xavier Church: Built in 1900 an example of "archeologically correct French cathedral gothic", with few flying buttresses. It is located on 225 6th Avenue.
8)All Saints Episcopal Church: Founded in 1867, located on 286-288 7th Avenue. It was built in 1893, modeled in the English Gothic style. The front and part of the interior have been restored after a fire in 1976. The front window is a copy of rose windows in Gothic churches. Louis comfort Tiffany designed the stained glass windows for the chapel in 1867. He was influenced by the windows of churches in England and France. But, because of the fire, only three of his original windows have remained in tact. Episcopalianism is Catholic in doctrine and liturgy, but reinforced by Calvinism. The Episcopalian church is part of the Anglican communion.
