Two Articles

Two Articles

Hey guys,

Saw these two articles in the New York Times a week or two ago, have been meaning to post them.

“Whatever Happened to Sex in Movies?” – Discusses the lack of heterosexual sex in serious American movies, the prevalence of “the demure fade to black and the prudish pan — coitus interruptus via a crackling fire and underwear strewn across the floor,” combined with exploiting female bodies to attract male audiences. Blames “Neo-Puritanism and the mainstreaming of pornography” for these contradictory phenomena. Especially interesting in light of the Scarlet Letter and the reading we’ve been doing about Puritan New England.

“The Ripped and the Righteous” –  “The pectoral is political” – Perfect example of Foucault’s deployment of sexuality and the idea that physical discipline is related to moral discipline. Also illustrates how an old discourse gets recycled and reapplied to modern-day consciousness.
