Golf the Musical

Who would’ve ever thought such a great musical could be made from such an unpopular and simple topic—golf? When the word “golf” comes to mind, I immediately think of the elderly taking about twenty minutes preparing to tee off. So when I heard that “Golf the Musical” was playing at Mason Hall at Baruch College, I was not very excited to attend. However, it proves itself a splendid show.  Four actors and one pianist were performing that night, all with breathtaking vocal abilities. Together, they help Golf the Musical demonstrate innovative ideas through music and comedy, with a hint of social and political involvement.

Golf the Musical successfully brought laughter to the theater. The show opens with a song and dance concerning ten reasons why golf is important and worthy of a musical. Of course, none of these reasons are really logical and they actually intend to create humor. For example, one actor pours his love out for a golf club through an amazing solo. Such intimacy and affection makes the audience realize just how silly the topic is; yet, it was a great way to get everyone to laugh and just live the moment.

Some social aspects of life—mainly religion—were integrated into the musical through comedy as well. In one scene, the four actors pray for a better golf game. It takes place in a church with one priest that idolizes Tiger Woods and attempts to get others to follow his lead. Such a popular and effective allusion is a good choice to promote mirth. In addition, Golf the Musical has a scene that takes place in Purgatory. Two actors, with astonishing abilities to change their accents, play two popular deceased golfers enjoying an ordinary day. Their constant insults to each other remind us of how important it is to be able to laugh at things in our lives and not take everything too seriously.

Golf the Musical was easy to catch on to, even though golf is not something teenagers usually participate in. Parts of the musical include political comedy—mainly the executive branch. One song focuses on the importance of golf to certain presidents and something they were notorious for. There were many puns involved that satirizes their personality or a part of their life. The show also included Sarah Palin, which is something extremely recent. This helps the audience connect with the musical easier.

Overall, Golf the Musical was time well spent. Sometimes, people need a good comedy to release their stress and just laugh for an hour. Unlike stupid or sexual comedy found everywhere today, the musical was educational and funny in a way that was more popular years ago. The random and silly aspect of it worked well with the theme as a whole and even made golf more appealing.
