Creative Work 4 – Love’s Lullaby

The first creative work that I put together was actually something that was close to my heart – the inspiration being from childhood arts and crafts that I’d always loved so much, and my childhood dream of being an “actor, singer, or a crayon artist.” So in that design I created a piece of art with crayons and construction paper, something that I could really love. And for our second piece, the moment I started writing I found myself writing more and more until I had twenty pages of poetry that I couldn’t believe. The Rainstorm piece that I composed for the piano was also imagined in almost an instant, and I contribute all of the ease of the works of art because I had some inspiration to help me through it. Even though my weakest point is creating, it was easy for me to transfer a theme or style into a different medium, because it was almost a continuation of someone else’s art.
Finding that I was able to work through other people’s art better than creating my own out of nothing, I realized that nothing is created without doing this. The first creators must have had something to inspire them, even if it was just the people around them, and they continued their art in their own medium, in story or in song or visual art. That does not make any art less important, because it shows that every artist has his muse – has his inspiration for creation.
Seeing other students’ art in our class, I was able to see the incredible talents that were hiding out. While some people could sing, others could draw very well and some were incredibly talented at putting together digital pieces of art. Seeing all of these opened my eyes not only to the talent available, but the way that all of these talents could be used. For the visual work, Anna-Sofiya created a pop-up book. This is not the type of art I would have automatically expected, but all of the incredibly talented people in our class came up with very original ways to display their talents through these works.
If there is one thing that I can take from this class, it is to look at everything from an artistic eye. Everything can be considered beautiful, and everything that is beautiful can be art. Every artist hopes that what they create will incite some strong emotion in the viewer, and it is our job to be open to that emotion and appreciate the work for the love that the artist had for it.

Final Creative Work

The last three creative works I did were a collage of Maya Angelou’s “ I know why the caged bird sings”, a poem I wrote about a homeless man playing the saxophone, and an abstract movie with only words of society’s affect on us. As I strived to find a connection to these three works many thoughts crossed my mind. One thought in particular I felt was appropriate. I came in being “completely incomplete” meaning that I lacked the artistic inspiration that everyone needs. I had to break through my “cage”, reject my preconceived notions and be more accepting of different forms of art.

Coming into this class I had no prior knowledge of what I had to do. After just a few classes I started realizing my closed mindedness in terms of the arts. My first piece, I know why the caged bird sings, was an unconscious call from me saying that I was ready to experience something new. I felt that I was caged to a certain ideal and needed new and unique inspiration to satisfy my artistic need.  My second poem was an emotional delineation of an extremely talented but homeless man that I see everyday. It was a unique inspiration for me because prior to this class I would not have looked at that man twice. The third piece was a realization and a blatant statement to reject the stereotypical boundaries that are made for us and to be more accepting.

I feel that as my creative works progressed they grew not only in quality, but also in the emotional input I associated with them. My mental understanding of art itself, expanded to places were I never would have thought. Coming into this my weaknesses were many. I was unfamiliar with the technology we were required to use and more importantly I had a very narrow view of art. As time progressed I eliminated my weaknesses and turned them strengths. I sought inspirations from everything a picture, music, spoken word ect.

What I took most from this class is how much I learned about others. Every week I was truly excited to see what my peers had posted on our blog. I learned things about my friends that I would have never learned otherwise in a different class. I appreciated having a little insight into everyone’s minds and being able to experience other views.

This video is a collaboration of my other creative works. In it you will see pictures of caged birds and saxophone players and parts of the video of my third creative work. The song I chose is “Someday” by Rob Thomas.

Blurb 3 – Uniqlo

[display_podcast]

Originating from Japan, Uniqlo is one of the growing stores in SoHo. When you walk in, you are greeted by a unique yet mind-blowing display that changes all the time. It is full of creativity in its own funky way and unlike anything you will ever see, reminding me of Lady Gaga’s sense of style. The layout of the store is neat and simple yet sophisticated. Their clothes are stacked according to color and its very pleasing to the eye though I don’t really know what colors they are. However, that changes because on their tags, it tells you the color of the clothing, making my life much easier. Their t-shirts have popular Anime characters on them from Japan such as Detective Conan. Uniqlo also features collaborations with different Japanese and American artists such as Keith Haring, who is known for his cool American popart designs. Overall, Uniqlo serves as a great outlet culturally while providing basic essentials at affordable prices.
