Expo Awardees

The People’s Choice voting is over (Congratulations, Clarissa!) and the judges have decided on the category awards, too.  An excellent group of eportfolios in this year’s Expo.  Take a look at all the awardees and see the wide range of examples of what an eportfolio can be.

It’s not too early to start planning for next year’s Expo.  Eportfolio Expo 2012 is planned to be even bigger and better!

Urban Legends

A featheregg that Dasi Fruchter found in London.

A featheregg that Dasi Fruchter found in London.

Today we bring you Urban Legends, the blog of Dasi Fruchter, Queens ’12, in which she chronicles her study abroad experience in London.

Her blog is a great read–part travelogue, part reflection, and I’m anxiously awaiting the addition of recipes. (Should we expect any less from one of the organizers of CUNY Food Fest?)

Check out her thoughts on Honey Nut Shredded Wheat, theater, and the advantages of being kosher and sober.

Lee Quinby’s popular cross-campus Macaulay seminar on Doomsday uses their class site to share a number of multimedia projects and to have rich discussions. Check out their fascinating tag cloud to see some of the topics they hit upon–and visit the site to see some of the posts attached to these tags, including lots of commentary from Prof. Quinby. The Creative Projects are especially thrilling. Here’s an example.

One Seminar, One Site, Many Approaches

Prof. Healey’s 2010 Seminar 1 class built an impressive eportfolio with video projects, a photojournal, lots of blog posts, some useful tutorials from their ITF Tsai-Shiou Hsieh, and more.

Listen to students reflecting on the multimedia film project–including bloopers.

A Professor Studies Abroad

While many of our eportfolios are done by students and in conjunction with classes, our open system welcomes everyone in the MHC community to take part. Professor Gary Schwartz of Lehman College chronicled his trip to Asia in an eportfolio featuring lots of pictures and vivid descriptions of his adventures.

Lilach’s AUsome Phonetics Tutorial

Lilach Gez is a 2013 Brooklyn College Speech-Language pathology major.  Her AU enthusiasm is for her goal of becoming an audiologist and her study abroad trip to Australia.  Check out her trip timeline made with Dipity and her great Hour in a Minute tutorial on phonetics.

On the Gowanus, In the Community

Prof. Cheng’s Fall 2009 Seminar 3 site took a fun approach to developing their eportfolio by participating in a role-playing debate over the development of the Gowanus Canal Superfund Site. Members of the class assumed the identity of both real and fictional characters to debate their points, and they received a lot of attention and commentary from interested parties outside of MHC. The class also made PSAs to argue their points of view.  What do you think of this PSA?

NCHC

I’m recently back from giving a presentation on the Macaulay Eportfolios at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference (NCHC), which was held in Washington, DC this year.  I was on a panel with Joe Ugoretz, MHC’s Director of Technology and Learning, as well as Tyler Alterman from the class of 2012.  We got to talk about the process of choosing WPMU for our eportfolios, implementing them, providing training through workshops and tech fairs, and Tyler gave a great talk on the ways that he has used his eportfolio and BuddyPress.  Are you a friend of Septopus?

Being at the conference was a good reminder of some of the ways in which MHC is unique: our seven campuses, our laptop program, Instructional Technology Fellows, and an institutional interesting in having public-facing and open-source projects.  I am really proud to be part of the MHC community!
