'What hurrying human tides, or day or night!' ~Walt Whitman

To some, this view of the city is normal. For most, it’s captivating. This picture embodies New York as the “city that never sleeps” and “city of blinding lights”. The high angle from which the photograph was taken from exemplifies the tumultuous and busy nature of urban life. This moment shows that even at night, many cars are zipping by in the streets. Photographs can’t capture sound but this picture allows the viewer to almost hear the distant beeping and vrooming of cars. The noise may be irritating to some, but others hearing the familiar street sounds know that they are home. The twinkling lights also depict a defining characteristic of New York; this city isn’t itself without its electric radiance. The glow emitting from the buildings contrast greatly with the night sky which brings a sense of stars in the open sky. It’s hard to see actual stars in a metropolis as bright as New York but the city itself glows like a star, providing its residents a “starry” night every night. The glow from the photo offers a sense of peace and hope amidst everything that’s happening during that moment. Since this photo was taken during the Depression, people were definitely worrying about their next meal or finding a job, which is represented by the darkness of the night, but their surroundings still shines with hope. Too often we get so absorbed in the flow of our work that we don’t take the time to appreciate the place we are living in. New York is one of the most talked about cities in America but it’s ironic how the people who actually live here don’t appreciate its majestic nature as much as outsiders do.
