Ramón Caraballo and Paula Ortiz’s love and passion for books led them to open a bookstore, Libreria Barco de Papel. Both Ramón and Paula are Hispanic immigrants who have ignited their culture through the bookstore. Ramón is from Cuba and Paula is from Colombia. Paula’s sister is a Spanish teacher who was in need of books. Ramón, who used to sell books on the street, sold the books to Paula’s sister. Paula and Ramón met through Paula’s sister and since then, their friendship has only grown stronger.

Paula and Ramón both have a special connection to the bookstore. Ramón’s love for reading originated  in Cuba because reading is highly valued there. Paula stated that “the soul of this project” is Ramón. He believes that the written material of any culture and language is what connects people to where they come from. Ramón and Paula believe that they are reuniting people with their culture and heritage through books. When they first decided to open the bookstore, they were hoping to create a place that would provide children with Spanish books. They began to incorporate adult Spanish books within their bookstore due to an increased demand for them.

Almost all of Paula’s favorite books are written by female writers. The genre of books she likes includes history books because instead of stating facts, they allow you to relive the story. “ I think that it is a way to connect things I didn’t live in… You can better understand the world.” Furthermore, one of her favorite books is Arráncame la vida, written by Ángeles Mastretta, a Mexican writer. It is a love story that occurs during the time of the Mexican Revolution. It depicts the immense role women had during the Revolution, which makes it a more enjoyable read for her. Another one of her favorites is  Diary of Frida Kahlo. Paula appreciates her work because although some may only think of Frida Kahlo as a painter, she was also an amazing writer. Paula has great empathy for Mexican writers like Frida Kahlo. Paula also expressed her love for children books which is discussed in greater detail in the Children’s section.

Currently, Paula is a biology teacher and works at the bookstore whenever she is available. Ramón is also an owner and still remains determined to continue the program. Libreria Barco de Papel works with a non profit organization to provide children and adults with various cultural activities for free. They bring inspiring artists, writers, and their community all together to build meaningful experiences and relationships.
