Threats to Librería Barco de Papel

This project was a challenge at first because it was very difficult to find a Spanish bookstore in NYC. This is mostly due to the fact that the majority of them are being out-competed by chain bookstores causing them to shut down.

Upon walking into Librería Barco de Papel, one will notice that it is a small, independent bookstore, not directly on Roosevelt Avenue but instead around the corner. Although the bookstore is difficult to fund out of pocket, Ramón and Paula continue to provide the constant services they have.

Paula explained to us that competition causes this struggle to survive. However, she believes that the reason the bookstore still exists is because it is needed within the community.  She advises that for anyone who is planning to open a bookstore to think about what they are trying to achieve. Bookstore owners whose sole purpose is to earn profit will not succeed in the long run. A bookstore is more about how you can connect with the community and what services you can offer them. The profit Paula and Ramón receive is  used to further fund activities and programs, creating a cycle. Despite the difficulties Ramón and Paula face, they are rewarded with a cultural center they can enjoy with their community and certainly be proud of.
