A Rodent’s Best Life: More Restaurants Means More Rats

Exploring how restaurant density and new outdoor dining regulations in NYC under COVID-19 impact rat populations using NYC Open Data about rat sightings around the city.

To understand how rat populations are impacted by restaurant density in particular neighborhoods and by new regulations for outdoor dining due to COVID-19, we examined rat sightings (assuming that sightings correlated with rat populations) based on boroughs and zip codes using NYC Open Data, and compared it with our own data for neighborhoods with high restaurant density vs low restaurant density.
