Fresh Paint – Jeffrey Freedman

Ever wonder what it would be like to see Arab musicians play with Indian musicians?   How about a Kenyan musician playing with a musician from Denmark?  All of these crazy combinations are a reality thanks to the OneBeat program.

The NY Times article “A United Nations of Music” by Larry Rohter talks about the OneBeat program, sponsored by the Feds.  It brings together 32 musicians from 21 countries on 5 continents to write, produce, and record original music together before bringing it to American audiences.  The program allows for musicians from different countries to experience new forms of music they may have never heard before.  They can introduce their music to others to create new music and add the musical influences of others to their own music.

One of the major benefits of this program aside from the interchanging of different types of music is that it helps establish bonds between different cultures from around the world.   The bonds the musicians form with each other can continue even after the program ends.  The musicians can also take things they learn from other cultures and introduce it to their own cultures back home. It is basically a creative form of international diplomacy and cultural diffusion.

Seeing as how this program seems to successfully allow for cultures to share with one another, do you think similar programs could be as effective?  Could programs with international artists, students, chefs and other jobs produce similar results?  Could more programs like these have a serious impact on change for the better within the world?

  1. This is revolutionary not just for music but technology, politics and everything in the world. The purpose of establishing bonds between cultures is to progress and improve processes that are important to the ever changing world. Music, technology and political policies can be better tailored to the needs of everyone and improve its processes. The OneBeat program is the culmination of the world’s opinions and cultures, and the revolution of music.

  2. I think the OneBeat Program was an amazing idea. By meshing the musical styles of different countries, it creates a new, unique style. Every culture has its own distinct qualities and by combining them, we can introduce a completely improved genre of music. This program also allows different countries a chance to better understand one another’s music forms. I think if artists and chefs also created a program like this one, it would lead to a great change of cultural integration and development.

  3. Sounds like a great program. The US government sponsors this kind of international collaboration for students through its Fulbright International Education Exchange Program. There are a bunch of different scholarships and grants for US students to study abroad, and for non-US students to come here. The website is: http://fulbright.state.gov

  4. This program is definitely really interesting and innovative. It’s always exciting to learn more about different cultures and broaden your experiences, especially in the arts. This collaboration, and the other possible international collaborations you suggest (food, students, jobs), allows for each culture to contribute its strengths to a greater cause. Each cultural has something unique that separates it from other cultures, and if we can isolate these specialities and combine them into a universal project, I think we’ll be onto something really good and powerful.

  5. The OneBeat Program sounds like a really interesting idea and should definitely be expanded into other cultural aspects aside from music. Programs like these can provide a greater understanding of other cultures and lead to many more innovative ideas. Each culture has a distinct characteristic and its own strength that can help to improve other cultures and at the same time it still has room for improvement.

  6. Yeah, this would definitely be an effective method to promote peace, equality, and acceptance and demote segregation, racism, and any kind of ethnocentrism. Not only is this a form of cultural diffusion and international diplomacy as Jeff said, but music itself has the power to bring people together. There’s a very interesting social effect that music induces; it causes people to forget differences and it fosters an atmosphere of bonding. This is seen in concerts, churches, parties, and even family games of RockBand. Even when Tony plays music during our IDC class; students will sing along and tension diminishes; there’s a very positive atmosphere. So I think the OneBeat program would be great for creating peace in the world.

  7. The OneBeat Program seems to be onto something. Mixing and mashing musicians and instruments of different cultures would bring about a whole new realm, a whole new variety of music. There are already existing programs, restaurants, etc that implement diversity in their venues, but not on such a global scale. By bringing different cultures together, people can really begin to understand each other and that will be a factor in a brighter future.

  8. I think that programs like this could be very effective across all aspects of life. Bringing together people from different cultures allows for innovation that would be impossible without so many different types of people contributing. Having people from such different backgrounds come together and work with each other allows for the creation of revolutionary new things across all disciplines.

  9. I think similar programs can be very effective with a good source of funding. By bringing together people from different cultures, people are more likely to be open and up for enjoy new and different things. These people can learn more about different cultures and understand their differences better. I think music is a good place to start, especially with the OneBeat program, because music is something that almost everyone enjoys. I think it is possible to adapt this idea that the OneBeat program is founded on and apply it to other fields such as food, literature, etc.

  10. This kind of program allows for the kind of cultural diffusion that will help enrich the life experiences of those from different walks in life. Music is one of the universal forms of communication and entertainment that everyone can enjoy. There can only be true appreciation of life when one knows of all of the diversity that accentuate differences amongst people. OneBeat is a good way to spread awareness of differences in culture and will hopefully lead to less conflict between differing cultures.
