To My Mother

by Evy Michalos

In honoring what each of us holds dear
There is no other woman for our sake
Who, like a constant cadent song so clear,
Will push aside her needs and stay awake.
With love so keen your listless limbs do quake
Of comfort, kindness, love, and healing deep,
I wonder if you see the home you make.
Such precious hours of rescue I can keep
Though these I know will surely thwart your sleep.
Plagued by prying shadows, us, each day
And all the troubles, fears, and hopes we heap,
How is it that you still will smile that way?
In all my cells such sacrifice is known,
In us is mother’s dedication shown.
