THE LITTLE THINGS
I’m thankful for staring out the window on summer-night car rides,
the sharp wind hitting my face
and slowly replacing the smell of salt and sand
watching God mix red, yellow and orange with his paintbrush
until the sunlight is replaced
by the lights of cars on the highway
bright, blurry circles following me home
For moments of uncontrollable laughter
that cause faces to turn red
tears springing from the corners of eyes
laughing so hard it hurts,
so hard you have to leave the room
For staying inside on Friday nights
to watch movies with my mom
curled up with a blanket
and a bowl of rocky road
engulfed in the dark
except for the bright TV light
For lyrics of songs that make me feel
and the puppy that passes me on the street
for the first flurry of snow on a cold December day
and the smile of the woman who makes my coffee
I’m most thankful for the way the light leaks into my room each morning,
creeping in inch by inch
until the darkness has been cast out
creating shadows on my walls
and marking the start of yet another day
