Field Lab 1
Although one may think that using a GPS to track a location is an easy task, it proved to be otherwise. We spent about 40 minutes looking for the red hawks geocache, which was located at N 40° 46.469 W 073° 58.065, only to realize that we had been working with two different sets of units, and that we had to convert the degrees, minutes and seconds displayed on the GPS into degrees and decimals. At this time, seeing that we were closer to the Alice in Wonderland geocache (located at N 40° 46.502 W 073° 57.975), we decided to try and locate that one instead. However, after reaching the Alice in Wonderland statue, we realized that the geocache was slightly northeast of the statue (approximately 20 feet). Trying to find the exact coordinates was slightly challenging and frustrating; it seemed as though every time we breathed, the coordinates changed. Unable to find the exact coordinates, we settled for N 40° 46.503, W 73° 57.978. This location was simply an area among a group of trees. In front of us, we saw the Conservatory Water, while the Alice in Wonderland statue was located to our right. Mission accomplished!
