That Girl is an American sitcom starring Marlo Thomas as the main character named Ann Marie. She is an aspiring actress who moves from her hometown of Brewster, New York to the big city of New York where she sees dreams and opportunities. However, as she navigates through the city, doing random auditions and small sketches, she must take on some odd jobs to support herself in between.

That Girl was developed by writers Bill Persky and Sam Denoff, who had served as head writers on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Some consider That Girl to pioneer and set the stage for the later successful show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Ann Marie is a single woman who is college educated, single (with no intention of getting married), and self-sufficient. She is a character archetype that was never featured in women actresses in the 1960’s and before. This show is often regarded to as an indication in the shift of gender roles in America, and helped start the feminist-era.

Ann Marie wore graphic, eye-popping, candy-colored designs on That Girl to distinguish herself from the traditional housewife worn by other female actresses during that time.
