Fighting Racism is Possible

The article “Racism without Racist” describes a very disturbing future triracial stratification system much like the ones in countries across Latin America with whites at the top followed by honorary whites and the collective black at the bottom— a system in which the fight against racism will be shut down by claims that racism is no longer a problem and the intermediate racial groups serve as a buffer for racial conflicts, keeping the whites at the top and the blacks at the bottom. I completely disagree with this bleak and rather pessimistic view of America. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying racism is not a problem, racism is a big problem in this country but isn’t that the first step in fixing a problem, recognizing that it exists. In fact according to a Washington Post article fifty percent of Americans think racism is a problem— while it is evident that only forty-four percent of whites think it is a problem in comparison to the seventy-three percent of blacks, it is still being acknowledged as an issue we need to deal with and that is far from the fight for racism being drowned out by the “color- blind music” as Bonilla-Silva claimed in his work. The increased use of social media as a platform for such issues has given rise to powerful movements such as black lives matter and I truly believe in the ability of the new generation to fight injustice.

The article uses data such as income gaps and education opportunities to back up this claim; however i think that by making education more accessible to the youth of this country, which is after all its future, we can lessen that gap and eventually do away with it. If education was easier to attain in this country and less of a financial burden people would not have to choose between being homeless and going to college and as a result they would be better educated and equipped to get those higher earning jobs. American spends billions of dollars in wars and in subsidizing corporations that do not contribute as much as they could to our economy, surely it could afford to give free college education to its youth— after all what could be more important than investing in the future presidents, doctors, engineers, artists, and innovative thinkers that the country needs in order to grow and also compete with world standards for intelligence and technology. I’m not saying that racism and inequality will be eradicated completely in the near future but it definitely won’t go unnoticed and the voices of those standing up for equality and justice will only ring louder to expose the racism and unfair treatment that people experience in their everyday lives. The youth in this country has so much power and potential to make a difference and i think with proper education and awareness we can strive towards a better America where injustice and racism won’t be completely wiped out but it definitely won’t go on without a fight for what is just.
