The Year of the Flood
My Body Is My Earthly Ark (Reflection)

“My Body Is My Earthly Ark” from The God’s Gardeners Oral Hymnbook pg 93

Being particularly fascinated by bodies, “My Body Is My Earthly Ark” holds special significance for me. While the message is short and simple, it seems to be one of the most meaningful and spiritual songs from The God’s Gardeners Oral Hymnbook. Firstly, I am touched by the metaphor of the body as an ark. As a “proof,” as protection. As a vessel. Thinking of our bodies, and ourselves, in this light is reaffirming. It gives hope “by light of spirit’s guide.” Even if one doesn’t embody a strong spirituality, this hymn shows that the body itself can provide and sustain. It doesn’t purport bliss or immortality, but rather a more material hope, found in flesh.
