Mama Mia, it’s Mamilla

“Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?” I highly doubt that it is possible for anything to resist the temptation of a stroll through Mamilla Mall in the heart of Jerusalem. The luxury boutiques, lavish delicacies and restaurants, and luxurious architecture and grandeur of the strip make this “mall” a hotspot for tourists and Jerusalemites of all types.

To me, what makes Mamilla stand out, is its incorporation between the “old and new” of the city. To me, Mamilla serves as a bridge between the angelic and ancient Ir Ha’Atika and the sleek and modern Ir Ha’Chadasha-a bridge for all to trek to enjoy our holiest city.

This past week, as I briskly walked through Mamilla, I noticed something new however, I was unable to decipher was struck a chord me. It was not the opening of a new boutique Brands, nor the opening of American Eagle towards the middle of the mall, and it was not the renevation of Fox nor the addition of Luciana to Mamilla, it was the delicate and dainty, yet striking and stunning new sculptures lining the walls of the Mall.

To the best of my knowledge, each month or so, the theme of the artwork lining Mamilla is switched up. This visit of mine, the artwork seemed to capture the Old and New generations of our city. Sculpture of babies and diapers hanging upside down, grandmothers with shopping bags galore, and kids on the beach really got to me.
