The Dominican community makes up a percentage of Staten Island’s total population. It continues to increase across the Island every year, providing more diversity to the Latino population.
In Staten Island .86 % of the total population are from Dominican Republic. According to the 2005-2009 censuses the highest concentrations of Dominicans on Staten Island are in Stapleton/Fox Hills 10304, Mariners Harbour/point Ivory 10303, and West New Brighton 10310. From 1990 to 2009, the population of Dominicans steadily increased across Staten Island. Compared to the other boroughs, Staten Island has the smallest Dominican population; the Bronx has the largest. In district 1 of Staten Island (map shown below), where the Dominican population is most densely populated, there are more owner occupied housing units than renter occupied. Also the average household size of an owner occupied unit is 3.05 where the average size of a renter occupied unit is 2.52. Also in district 1, many more people have a high school education than any other degree of studies. The unemployment rate in this district is extremely low and the majority of the people are in the civilian labor force. The Dominican population is still growing and thriving across Staten Island.
