The New School Universtiy: A Village Institution or Not?

Since its founding in 1919, The New School had undergone a vast multitude of structural expansions, internal divisions, some controversy within the administration, and yet, garnered much recognition thanks to the academic accomplishments of its students and faculty. This is largely due to its location in the bohemian Greenwich Village.

In 1919, the New School for Social Research was founded by former Columbia professors. The main building of the New School University is located on Sixty-Six West Twelfth Street, though you can see the school’s red flags all over the nearby area.

“People went to the New School the way you go to a party, almost like going abroad. Education was chic and sexy in those days. It was not yet open to the public. The people in the lobby of the New School were excited, expectant, dressed to the teeth…Young, attractive, hip, they were the best Americans.” – Anatole Broyard, a former student of the New School
