Asian Immigrants Into Flushing

So how did Main St., Flushing end up teeming with Asian Americans today?

A 19th-century New Yorker was typically Irishman, who was one out of the wave of first immigrants from German and Ireland.

An early 20th-century New Yorker was a Jewish or Italian, one out of the many Eastern or Southern European immigrants.

The next foreign immigration started when immigration laws eased in 1965. Since 1970s, New York has been filling up with Asian Americans who took advantage of the political appeasement.

“Main Street” means homey and close knitted in American lores, as well as “Flushing”, which is a byword for similar meaning for a non-central region that is home to clerks, city workers and technicians. Main St.,Flushing used to be such a place, but with immigrants, especially Asian immigrants, and technological advances entering the area, now Flushing largely epitomizes Asian immigrant population. They were able to settle in by seizing opportunities from depression of retail property values and establishing commercial bases, which is now evident in today’s overflowing dominantly Chinese restaurants on Main Street (Morrone).
