This website gives an overview of the Mexican community in New York but specifically in Staten Island. Demographics from the 1990-2000 Census are included, as well as articles published in newspapers and on the internet concerning the Mexican population in Staten Island. Further, political issues concerning Mexico-U.S relations covered by the media are included.

To broaden the readers knowledge on Mexico and its culture,  different pages elaborate on Mexican art, clothing and textiles, geography, food, history, and Day of the Dead, a special holiday.

We also visited a local Mexican Deli, Lamovida Deli and Grocery, and ate at a Mexican Restaurant, MezCal, located on 20 Bradley Avenue in Staten Island.

The creators of this website are Kelly DePietro and Claudia Olender.  Both students attend the Macaulay Honors College at the College of Staten Island. Kelly DePietro is majoring in Accounting and Claudia Olender is majoring in Psychology.

The Restaurant

One of many Mexican restaurants located on Staten Island, MezCal is located on Bradley Avenue.  The restaurant is named after a distilled alcoholic beverage made from maguey plant. In the restaurant we ate quesadillas, soft, corn tortilla stuffed with melted cheese; topped with red sauce, green sauce, and sour cream. With a wide variety of food, MezCal is a favorite pick.

Though on the smaller side, MezCal still has seating both indoors and outdoors.  The service at MezCal was excellent.  The needs of all customers were met and the waiters came around frequently for further service.

The Deli

Located in Port Richmond, Lamavida deli is a small Mexican deli with a large variety of Mexican foods and utensils.
