It has been a very disorienting feeling for me, but at the same time an eye-opening experience because I have not seen many of the things I saw during this semester. Even though it was the most confusing I thought that the abstract art works might have had the most profound effect on me. This may be because they are like an intricate puzzle. It’s very cryptic and mysterious. I think it had an effect on me because of that disorienting feel that you get when you look at an abstract piece of art. Unlike other things you can easily relate to things that you know but abstract art has this I have no idea what’s going on feel. Like my trip to the Rubin Museum but there was so much to it. The layers and layers of culture, history, and religion that had to be understood to fully understand the works of art. But then I slowly began to piece things together. I think this is part of the allure of art. This process of learning and understanding new things.
Langston Hughes

On November 1, 2010 I went to the Macaulay building to watch the langston Hughes reading by David Mills. I went in expecting a basic reading of his poetry similar to our other readings with Jonathan Foer and Jhumpa Lahiri, but David Mills surprised me when he walked in with no introduction and began his readings of Langston Hughes. He did not have a paper or a book which he read off, he had the stories and poems memorized. His surprise entrance captured the audience’s attention but his spectacular acting kept audience engaged throughout the entire reading. David altered his voice dramatically from character to character. He played all sorts of characters from a college student, to a sassy woman, to a passionate pastor, a police officer and a frightened deacon. He mentioned at the end that he had a lot of room to interpret the poems. He said that he added a lot of extra movements, reactions, and sound effects.
At the end of the performance he stopped acting and became himself ” David Mills ” and began to explain the works and told the audience about himself. I was able to appreciate the works of Langston Hughes so much more because not only did David read them to us but he acted it out. David Mills’ entrance really threw me off and although I was confused about what was happening but I began to enjoy the reading because I was able to visualize all the different stories and characters. This really helped me piece together what Langston Hughes was writing about. Hughes addressed problems with racism, segregation, and the advancement of the black community. I was able to piece all this together because of Mills great acting.

I went to MOMA, also known as the museum of modern art and checked out a couple exhibitions. Sum of Days, talk to me, and de Kooning were a couple of ones that i went to. I really enjoyed the talk to me exhibition which had a lot more technological artwork. Like the clock, where two men are sweeping garbage and from an bird’s eye view displays the time. The de kooning exhibition was very abstract and I did not enjoy it at all. I look at abstract art and find it hard to understand what the painter is trying to express. Like the picture above, all i see is colors and shapes, which i don’t really understand. This frustration maybe because I do not have enough background knowledge on the paintings and this time the disorienting feeling has overwhelmed me. The intricate puzzle is too complex that I don’t even know where to begin.
