About The Project

Our team wanted to relay a relevant science issue to a broad audience, so we decided to organize a Citizen Science Café about nuclear power.  We originally intended for guest speakers; however, due to scheduling issues, we instead decided to screen an excerpt of the documentary, Uranium: Is It A Country? (Schnatz 2008).  The screening was precluded   by a powerpoint presentation (available on this site) explaining nuclear energy.  The screening will be followed by group discussions on the future of nuclear energy in the United States.

We addressed the following stands in our presentation:

Strand 1: To catch the audience’s interest in the future of nuclear energy.

Strand 2: To fully explain the nuclear energy, its advantages, and its disadvantages to the audience, so that they comprehend the topic and use accurate terminology.

Strand 4: To have the audience reflect on their own experiences and relate them to their knowledge of nuclear power to come up with opinions and possible solutions.

Strand 5: To participate in open, informed discussion with other attendees at the event, and with other citizen scientists and professionals in the future.

In addition, we paired up with the Macaulay Gastronomy Club and the Macaulay chapter of the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND) to fundraise canned food for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.  Afterwards, student participants attended the annual Hallo-Turk-Mas party.
