Subways are more than just metal and machinery. They dictate how and where people work and live, and are in turn affected by their constituency. The modern urban subway system is a product of industrialization, settlement, and the demand for communication. The presence of subway systems in large cities such as New York, London, and Tokyo shows that these cities and their inherent characteristics made them the optimal locations for respective unifying urban transportation systems.
