Water Sector

The goals of Plan Verde for the Water Sector are outlined in the following slide:

The Mexico City Climate Action Program Summary 2008-2012 outlines additional and specific actions that will be taken to reduce emissions in the Water Sector.

1. The water pump control systems of the Mexico City Water System (MCWS) will be further improved to avoid unnecessary use of equipment during low demand hours. This will reduce the amount of electricity consumed.

2. Reduce emissions from septic systems
Reduction of methane gas emissions by sewage and water treatment facilities in areas that will benefit the city on a cost-benefit analysis

3. Energy improvement of MCWS water pump system
A plan to maintain the existing infrastructure associated with “potable water, sewage, water treatment and reuse systems of the MCWS in order to reduce the electrical energy consumed with their use.

4. Generate energy from already existing hydroelectric power plants at waterfalls

5. Leak suppression, Pipe Rehabilitation, Water Loss Detection, as well as, decreasing the activities of various plants in Mexico City will also reduce amount of electrical energy used.

6. A Campaign for Home Water Savings to promote ideas such as low-flow toilets

7. Reduction of Mud Emissions from Biological Treatment Plants to reduce greenhouse gases
