Land and Conservation

According to the Green Plan, Mexico City plans to maintain the ecological balance of their city by rescuing conservation lands. Through initiatives like restricting habitation of conservation lands and the restoration and maintenance of ecosystems, Mexico City plans to launch a campaign to raise awareness for the protection of these lands.

Mexico City Initiatives include:
– the creation of a specialized surveillance corps that will be in charge of the conservation of land (launched in 2008)

– the recovery and restoration (through reforestation and other efforts) of 150 “high environmental value sites” which have been occupied by human settlements over a course of 6 years

– the conversion of a portion of cultivated lands to plantation woodland by 2012

Along with these initiatives, Mexico City will assess the possibility of implementing “green taxes” and “compensation dues” for those who have caused environmental harm in order to pay for the conservation of land
