Macaulay Cake Walk

Maria Devikumar, Jemi Jacob, Maridalia Martinez, Swathi Mummini, Irene O’hare, Jane Shaji

We strolled down Columbus Avenue in search of a perfect treat to satisfy our craving. The busy avenue led us to our first attraction, the well known, Magnolia Bakery. As we smelled the sugary goodness, we knew we wanted to explore the sweetness Columbus Avenue had to offer. In a few short steps from Magnolia, we stumbled upon a quaint little coffee shop, with the alluring name of the Sensuous Bean. The smell of coffee from outside drew us in to the tiny shop with more variety of coffee beans than you can imagine. Craving for more coffee, we made our way back to 67th street to find a unique organic coffee spot called Café Saint Honore. Traveling on this sweet journey we learned that we could never go wrong with sugar and organic, and small cafes offer a cozy feel for a better value.

Fresh Experience.

1. What did you do?

We explored Fresh on the corner of 67th Street and Columbus Avenue.

2. Why did you choose it?

We choose it because Fresh is known for their high quality products since 1981.

3. What did you learn?

Fresh is a fairly new company created by a couple from Boston who had their own shop. Unsatisfied with soap retailers in the market, they experimented and created their own lines of soap using sugar for the first time in history. Barney’s bought some of their soaps to sell and from there, Fresh flourished by word of mouth. And to this day, they are combining natural ingredients with technologies of science in order to bring a different experience for beauty and skin care.

Some of their famous products include innovated Brown Sugar Body Line, Sake Body Wash(with actual 60% real Sake), and their best selling Rose Butter Lip Balm. We tried these products ourselves and they’re amazing. You should try them too!

Indian Burial Grounds Under Lincoln Center?

What did you do?

Interviewed a few employees (only one of them helpful >.>) about Lincoln Center and its events.

Why did you choose it?

Our subconscious egos were attracted to the largest building in the area like moths are attracted to a Daft Punk light show.
What did you learn?

That the Lincoln Center’s events go beyond just the opera and theater. Also, no Indian burial ground, but we think that Free Masons, Reptilians, or the Decepticons are somehow involved. Possible B grade action movie level plot may be present.

“Middle Names” may or may not be real, but aren’t those awesome?

Yes, yes they are.

AMC Loews Theater Lincoln Square

We researched the closest movie theater to the Macaulay Honors College Building- AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13. WE chose this topic because we were all interested in this theater, film, and generally watching movies. We learned to work together efficiently and the long history of AMC Loews and this particular theater.

A Walk Along Broadway

View Walking Tour in a larger map

Jackie Hogan, Camilla Niedzwiedz, Christina Borovilas, Maria Mannarino (Hunter College)

We walked up broadway and columbus and recorded the major landmarks along our way.

We wanted to capture the essence of one of the major avenues of manhattan, Broadway.

We learned so much today from Broadway itself to the technology we utilized to broadcast what we had captured to the world via the internet. We learned how to work with imovie. specifically, we learned how to edit film, cut out audio, and add music in the background. In addition, we learned how to create a google map and add in our film clips to each location we taped.

The Empire Hotel

The Empire Hotel
44 West 63rd Street
New York, NY 10023

What did you do?
We chose to film at the Empire Hotel, across the street from Lincoln Center and Dante Park.

Why did you choose it?
We had never visited previously, but thought it looked interesting, so we decided to go inside.

What did you learn?
As it turns out, The Empire Hotel security is pretty relaxed.  We were able to freely roam guest-only areas, including the rooftop pool and cabanas (now off-season, and covered in snow).

I Found God on the Corner of 65th and Columbus

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Manhattan New York Temple
www.ldschurchtemples.com
125 Columbus Avenue
New York, NY 10023

What did you do?

-We filmed the exterior of temple, went inside and spoke to two Mormon missionaries. However, we had to adhere to the strict rules of the temple and could not go in further than the main entrance. To proceed we would have needed an authorized letter from the Mormon president. We also asked a young Mormon couple about their experiences.

Why did you choose it?

-We thought it’d be interesting to explore a religious space located in such a busy and metropolitan area.

What did you learn?

-In addition to learning about their strict rules, we also learned that the interior of the temple was built with consideration to the hustle and bustle of the city (windows and walls, for example, are soundproof).

Project Z: Contemporary Critique of Zara (the Prequel)

We are Paul Alzate, Grace Prestamo, and Motahara Whab and are all from Queens. For this project, we chose to learn about the clothing store Zara: the style of clothing that is sold, the type of people that patronize the store , the prices as compared to other retailers, and the satisfaction of the clientele and the employees. Through this small project, we also learned the various facets of iMovie, like the tools it provides to the modern filmmaker, and cool things like flipping clips over in editing mode.

Why did we choose this project? Well, obviously to learn about Zara and advance our skills with the technology Macaulay gives us. Our motivation wasn’t affected at all by the fact that we originally wanted to do our project on ABC, and had to come up with an alternative plan. No! We love Zara! 🙂

We learned about not only iMovies, and the process of recording a video, but we also learned about ourselves and our limitations. Grace learned that she can interview like no else, Motahara learned she can narrate introductions eloquently, and Paul learned that he can be a cameraman if his hands didn’t shake so much.

Starbucks: Hardly Sensuous

We chose to take a closer look at the differences between a coffee chain product and a family business.  In an area as historic as the Upper West Side, it is important to us to appreciate the small business offered by people like Joe, who try their best and love what they do.  We would argue that their contributions are what make this area unique.

Journey to and of the Met

This work was produced by Maxilia Arias, Lystona Fough, Kristina Nardilla, & Gregory Stankevich.

1. We used Dipity to create a time line of the history of the Metropolitan Opera.

2. The Metropolitan Opera was an unforgettable stop on the exploration of New York City art we undertook in Seminar 1.  We were eager to discover how this opera house has changed through the years on its journey to becoming a mecca for opera lovers from all corners of the world.

3. Before beginning this project, we were all strangers to Dipity. Now, we have a thorough understanding of the basics of this program.
