Project By: Amira Hassan, Kimberly Charnovesky, Andrea Cella, Nuwan Panditaratne-CSI.

1. What did you do?
For our project, we walked around the streets of NYC and areas surrounding 67th street paying close attention to how Fashion and style can be found everywhere. We entered different stores, attempted to interview people who work there to try and get their take on how fashion impacts the people of New York.

2. Why did you choose it?
There is no question that Fashion sense is an important characteristic of many New Yorkers. It is a form of self expression and gives a sense of belonging and identity.

3. What did you learn?
What we learned is that New Yorkers might just be the most fashionable people on the planet 😀 !

Barnes & Noble

Here’s our post:

We made a video of Barnes & Noble Bookstore, just in case anybody is not already familiar with it. We started out by filming the surroundings and then proceeded to go inside. We tried to give viewers a broad overview of what the store has to offer. The medium we used was film, and we used iMovie to create our project. Barnes & Noble holds a wide variety of books and other media. Through exploring the store, visitors can find books on all kinds of topics ranging from vampires to salads. We learned that Barnes and Noble has much to offer, and it would take a long time to explore the entire store.

We had a fun time and we hope you did too. Thanks a lot!

Barnes and Nobles: Our Modern Day Saloon

Today we went to Barnes and Nobles, a favorite place to read and relax. Upon entering Barnes and Nobles and noticing the vast number of books on controversial topics, we realized that Barnes and Nobles is the modern day Saloon, for intellectuals to gather and discuss their ideas. We reaffirmed our love for Barnes and Nobles.

The Gang Visits Juilliard

We are…Abass Bayo-Awoyemi, Andrew Yen, Scott Dumont,
Amrita Narine, Mei Yi Chan, and Anna-sofiya lupolover. THE END!

No but seriously today, we explored the neighborhood encompassing the Macaualy College Honors Building. The Lincoln Center for performing arts caught our attention and we ended up walking over to the Juilliard School, which is
located at Lincoln Center. We took some exclusive footage though we weren’t allowed past the 2nd floor of the building without first applying for a scheduled tour. We chose to explore Juilliard because it’s such a reputable school and we all secretly envy their entire student body for having such talent. We learned that these talented artists either do a lot of their sleeping on the Juilliard lobby stairs and that there are free tours from Monday to Friday so you can check it out too!

Young Kyu Park

Central Park has been in the works for over 150 years.  The park opened in 1859 and through the process of urbanization transformed this 843 acres of muddy swamp into an extravagant public space in the heart of Manhattan. The park hosts approximately 25 million visitors each year. The park was designed by architect Frederick Law Olmstead. Central park was but a mere experiment for Olmstead, who’s main project was Prospect Park located in Brooklyn. We did a small documentary on the everyday activities in Central Park. We chose Central Park because it was conveniently close to Macaulay, and there were many angles in which we could approach it. We also it would be the model of the ideal public space. We learned of the vast range of activities that one can participate in Central Park.

Tasty Cafe

For the our second tech fair for our freshmen year, we were asked to study the neighborhood surrounding the MHC building at 67st. Our pursuit to truly understand the lives of the people in the area and our need to makeup for missing breakfast, we decided to look at a local restaurant. We used menupages.com to research local cafes where people of all backgrounds situate. Tasty cafe is located in a residential area and provided a wide selection which would draw all types of people in. From our project we gained a better understanding of the Mac OS system and iMovie and the sights  and styles of the people in the upper west side.

REFLECTION

1] What did you do?
We did a comparison between the multinational chain, Starbucks coffee, and the independent Sensuous Bean.

2] Why did you choose it?
The prime objective of this project was to determine which of the two coffee shops vendor the best quality coffee to the residents of 67th street as well as to the Macaulay students.

3] What did you learn?
In conclusion, we learned that there is a direct correlation between hospitality (offered by employers) and the quality of coffee because customer associates who are kind to their customers generally tend to be more attentive in the products they sell. Expansion of a business inevitably lowers the ability to pay attention to minute details. We saw that The Sensuous Bean is able to focus more on customer satisfaction, quality, and variety.

(Tara Gildea also participated in this group, although her name was accidentally omitted from the credits page in the video).

Religion and 67th Street

We explored the religious culture of the 67th Street area because we all come from different backgrounds. We wanted to explore the diverse makeup of the neighborhood and the Macaulay student body. We learned about the various religious establishments in the area, and the contributions they have made to the city. The neighborhood is full of innovative and historical religious communities that have profoundly affected the lives of the members of this community.

What did you do?

Our group went on an enlivened and thrilling exploration at the Apple store on Broadway at West 67th Street near Macaulay. We tried using different Apple products such as AppleTV, iPod Touch, iPhone, etc. and browsed through the various softwares and hardwares.

Why did you choose it?

Apple is awesome! Seriously. We love our MacBook Pros.

What did you learn?

We learned that we could clean our laptop screens in the Apple store with their spray. There were many graphic programs on display also. We also found out that the AppleTV plays Youtube HD videos. The iPad is coming out in late March and the Apple store will have it on the first day! We used iMovie to put this video together and learned some techniques.
