A central theme of our course was how different immigrant communities recreate a sense of place both through visible signs that structure this place and through activities that allow them to continue their cultural practices. Over the course of the semester, we learned about the Caribbean community and participated in a walking tour of Flatbush where we visited the main commercial strip and took photos of markers of the community. We then used the themes we discovered to compare and contrast Flatbush to a different immigrant community.
