1. Introduction
Sunset park is a neighborhood like no other. What is found around this park is a undeniable dichotomy of identity. A stroll along 5th ave would provide one with the Carnecerias and Taquerias of Mexico, while a detour around 8th ave. conjures images of Caton. In order to reach some sort of union between these two communities we decided to utilized the one aspect of any culture that is easily appreciated by another, food! This worked incredibly well with the main prospect of the project, the connection of parks with community. When one consideres that this park serves as both the literal dividing line and symbolic unifying space.
It divides the community literally by serving as a barrier between both ethnic enclaves. However, this does not prevent the intercomprehension of culture. The park is spotted with volleyball courts and BBQ pits. It is these BBQs which provide an inkling to the main way in which these communities use this park. Many people everyday go through sunset with goals of picnicking on its beautiful lawns.
With this website we wish to take a new perspective on community and parks by inviting everyone to recreate the sense of community and belonging initiated when one picnics. That is because in order to successfully picnic, the event is not a solitary effort it requires the contribution of numbers of local business and numbers of people just to provide the cheese, the meat, or the sweets. Thus we explored picnicking as an expression fo community and culture by providng the reader with the resources necessary to feel as a part of the park and have a good time doing it.
So get off the computer, get on the N/R/D to 42st or B11 to Sunset Park, and buy some Carnitas, some char siu, or Queso fresco and EAT!
