Exploring the Food, Fashion and People of Flatbush and Jackson Heights

We compared the South Asian culture found in Jackson Heights, Queens with the West Indian and Caribbean cultures found in Flatbush, Brooklyn. We specifically looked at the cuisine, clothing and residents found in each neighborhood.These three things give a culture a means of expression.

We started our journey looking for differences between the two communities. Instead, we ended up finding more similarities than differences between the two neighborhoods in these three aspects. In terms of food, seafood is a major component of South Indian and West Indian and Caribbean cuisine. We noticed that brands of instant noodles and milk mixes were found in specialty food stores in both neighborhoods. Fresh produce were also found in both grocery stores and the same vegetables and spices are being used in completely different ways. In clothing, the style of long skirts were found in boutiques in both places. All the clothes in the store displays were brightly colored in Flatbush and Jackson Heights, with intricate embroidery and bead work setting apart the fancy clothes from the everyday wear. People in both neighborhoods were observed in traditional and Western clothing, walking down the streets with their friends and families. Different languages can be heard when walking down the streets. They come to the neighborhoods because both Jackson Heights and Flatbush remind people of the lands they left behind when they came to America. Neighborhoods like these help people keep in touch with the traditions and culture of the people back home.

Seeing so many traditional clothes and accessories displayed all around the neighborhood helps to recreate a sense of place for the predominantly South Asian residents.

Along with more extravagant outfits, Jackson Heights also contains more everyday wear clothing.

Outfits from both communities, whether for special occasions of everyday wear, display bright colors and various designs.

Accessories play a significant role in both West Indian and Caribbean communities and South Asian communities.

Hats are more popular in West Indian communities and Scarves are more popular in East Indian communities.

Restaurants in Flatbush feature a menu catered towards its Caribbean clientele, with food options like roti and jerk chicken.

Similarly, restaurants in Jackson Heights feature traditional Indian cuisine including samosas and chole.

Traditionally Caribbean snacks help to recreate a sense of place for the residents of the community by providing a reminder of their home countries.

In the same manner, grocery stores in Jackson Heights offer traditional South Asian snacks, another way that the community recreates place.

Fish markets in Flatbush offer fish that are important in the food eaten traditionally in the Caribbean.

Similarly, a Bangladeshi grocery store in Jackson Heights stocks seafood that are staples in the diets of the residents.

Groceries in Flatbush contained food items that we, as non-Caribbean Americans, were unfamiliar with. However, these foods are very important for the population to maintain close ties with their home countries.

In the same way, groceries in Jackson Heights sell food items that may seem foreign to those not of South Asian descent but are familiar to immigrant residents.

This meat shop in Flatbush offers pork options that are popular among the Caribbean residents.

This meat shop in Jackson Heights similarly offers meat that is common in South Asian diets. This particular shop offers halal meat for the predominantly Muslim clientele.

Here we can see how people in the Jackson Height's neighborhood dress both casually and traditionally. The two men walking are wearing more casual or Americanized clothing while the woman walking away is wearing more traditional clothing found in the South Asian culture.

People in Jackson Heights casually look through clothes displayed outside the store. The store owner(the man) offers assistance to see what they're looking for. Interactions like these is what makes a community.

We can see a similar relationship between customers and storeowners in Flatbush, as they chat together in the store.

Customers casually look around the fish market in Jackson Height's. Various supermarkets in the neighborhood provide different necessities, which allows people easy access to what they need.

Like the fish market, this market shows us the everyday life of people in Jackson Heights. Customers scan the shelves looking for what they need to fill their refrigerator.

Like Jackson Heights, customers in Flatbush purchase their necessities. We can see how people across cultures, have similar lifestyles when it comes to everyday things.

In Flatbush, this part of the market serves as a relaxation area. Both storeowners and customers sit down and chat with their friends.

Residents in the area of Jackson Heights also share a form of relaxation, as they sit comfortable outside next to all the stores.

These flags in a market in Flatbush show us how the people take pride in their culture and the countries they came from. Even though they are in America, they won't forgot where they came from and it'll always be a part of their life.
