There will be an upcoming special election for the citywide election position of Public Advocate on February 26, 2019. As a result, anyone who isn’t currently registered or wants to change their voter registration by mail needs to do so by Friday, February 1, 2019 and postmarked by February 6, 2019. If you wish to do this in person, the deadline is Friday, February 16, 2019.

In addition to being second in line for mayoral succession, the Public Advocate’s main duty is to act as a mediator between city residents and city officials. Previous public advocates include current mayor Bill de Blasio and Tish James, the newly-elected Attorney General for the State of New York.
