The UNCOMMON magazine is a unique blog created by today’s craftiest New York City teens. Each post is written by teens who have talent in art, fashion designing, photography, music and writing. The theme of the blog gives off a teen angst vibe giving viewers a lens of New York City’s art and culture through a teenager’s eye.

The UNCOMMON magazine is great because any New York City teen can post on it as long as they send it to the editors for approval. This gives teens with talent a platform to get noticed. Even though this blog is not well known, it is an up and coming blog that is shared by youth on social media and posts happen every week if not daily. This blog keeps up with the hottest events in the city and gives it a youthful twist. For example, most photographs feature teenage models and the teen writers discuss how their art topic pertains to the youth. This is seen in the most recent fashion article, “#WANG” which mentioned, “Alexander Wang gets us. He gets the youth, because he is the youth.”

The layout of UNCOMMON has a very photographic flow with clickable rectangular pictures that lead to the articles. The pictures for each article are powerful and unique which intrigues the viewers to click on a photograph or title that interests them. Comments and views are sparse but that is understandable since this blog only launched last year. The top and most viewed post named: “Why Your Personal Brand Needs Some Work”, is an op-ed fashion post showing the epitome of teenage work on UNCOMMON magazine. The informality and teenage angst vibe of UNCOMMON magazine is shown clearly in this article. The author writes his opinions informally using slang and sometimes foul language to get his point across. It’s very appealing because teens can take a break from reading formal and more serious literature and read a blog that relates to the way they would normally talk on topics that interest them. The UNCOMMON magazine not only features the most mainstream and recent topics in fashion and art but also features some peculiar art culture in the city like the unusual art article, “Art Asylum-The Living Museum at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.”

For a well-rounded and fresh look on art in New York City through a teens perspective, the UNCOMMON magazine should definitely be one of your top choices.
