Get Inspired to Color Your World with Color Me Katie

Katie Sokoler, author of Color Me Katie, seeks to bring creative happiness in her blog through colorful photographs, sprinkled with videos and cute commentary. Most of her videos are from a project she takes part in called Improv Everywhere , which shares a similar mission to her vision.

The format is several photos in each post with no more than two sentences between each picture, which ties into a certain theme of the post. There is a variety of the kinds of posts, but most of the themes center around creating a feel good vibe and providing inspiration. There are some recurring topics such as “Things that Makes Me Happy.”

” We should not fight to change the world itself,
Untitled
but to stop it,
Untitled
from changing us. “

This child-like outlook on life adds to the unique personality of Katie because most adults lose this perspective as they grow older and live in the “real world”. Katie is a Brooklynite living with her cat, Moo. She works as a freelance photographer and “professional fun maker”, along with many other things.

Although her blog appears to be very fluffy and fun on the outside, there are deeper reasons for the topic. Katie reveals to her readers that she was told as a child to be destined to work in a post office. Her family also has a history of depression, which motivates her to capture joyful images and creating happiness despite being in the midst of sadness.

“I made sure to fill some cracks in the sidewalk with the rocks for people who feel so low they just can’t look up.”

The look of her site is reminiscent of what she posts. Her background is a plain white background, mimicking a black canvas, with her photos and other content adding color. The format is fairly simple allowing her photos to be the center of attention. There are a few categories consisting of About Me, Press, Paper, Street Art, Twitter, and Facebook in vibrant fonts.

Color Me Katie has been around since October 2008 with the author posting a range of three times a month to up to twenty posts in a month. Her goal to bring out joy in others attracts several kinds of people to her blog.  There is a fairly large audience with approximately 17,000 followers on her blog, Twitter and Facebook. Color Me Katie has been mentioned in several magazines, including American Way Magazine, Time Out New York, Daily News, and more. Readers’ comments are majority positive, consisting of sentiments on how it makes them smile. The only criticism for this blog is to to update more regularly.

This blog has important life lessons. One of which is the idea of growing up does not mean you need to lose creativity. Both adults and children interact with several of Katie’s art pieces, such as playing hopscotch on the rainbow footsteps as seen below.

I recommend this blog to anyone who enjoys smiling at Katie’s inner childlike wonder with her surroundings!
