Afropunk Festival

Afropunk Festival

Okay, perhaps the Afropunk Festival isn’t completely underground, but I bet most people haven’t heard of it, nor do they know much about it. Despite its misleading name, it is not a celebration of only Afro-punk music. The festival is meant to celebrate artists of all styles. As described on their website, “the word AFROPUNK itself has become synonymous with open-minded, non-conforming and unconventional, placing the institution at the epicenter of urban culture inspired by alternative music”.

Many “up and coming” artists have made appearances at the Afropunk Festival, which has been held every summer since 2007. Last year’s artists included Erykah Badu, Janelle Monáe, Spank Rock, Das Racist, Flatbush Zombies, and Ninjasonik.

Admission to The Afropunk Festival is free as long as you RSVP, although the suggested donation is $25 (which will give you a fast pass to skip the lines). The most expensive ticket is $75, which includes a fast pass, a t-shirt, and a DVD.
