A lot of people like to try to achieve technical perfection on the violin. That is to say, they try to perform the hardest possible techniques with perfection — regardless of how beautiful or weird it sounds. While I agree that technical achievement is definitely essential for a good musician, I see the end goal of music more as an expression of beauty. When I first heard the Dvorak Romance for Violin in F minor, I was overtaken by how simply gorgeous and melodic this piece is. After hearing this recording, I was moved to try to recreate the uplifting experience of this piece and bring out melodic beauty in other works that I play.
