Gross Studio

Gross Studio is a photography studio and gallery originally located on 184 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. At the time, it was called Gross & Becher. When the 1870s rolled around, the city renumbered the neighborhood around Atlantic Avenue. As a result, 184 Atlantic Avenue became 176 Atlantic Avenue. By that time, the name of the photography studio was changed to Gross Studio.

Three brothers ran the studio. Their names were Julius. A Gross, Frederick Gross, and Richard Gross. Julius A. Gross was a photographer and the other two brothers were artists.

Julius A. Gross, Frederick Gross, and Richard Gross had German and Eastern European roots. When their family immigrated to the United States in the earlier part of the nineteenth century, they established themselves in New York City. The brothers jointly founded Gross & Becher on 184 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. Since then, hundreds upon thousands of people have walked on these streets, of different backgrounds and nationalities. The neighborhood has changed significantly. However, despite the many transitions, transformations, and developments that this neighborhood has faced, the architecture and structure of 176 Atlantic Avenue has remained constant throughout more than one century.

The types of photographs that were used in the studio included tintypes, ambrotypes, stereoscopes, and cartes-de-visite. These were the popular forms of photography in the 1800s.

Here are some of Julius Gross’ pictures in this slideshow.

Some of the pictures were contributed by with permission from Barbara Langdon in her website Langdon’s List of 19th & early 20th Century Photographers found on www.Langdonroad.com.
